Eugene A. VaganovDr. Eugene A. Vaganov was appointed Rector of Siberian Federal University effective November 28, 2006.

Dr. Vaganov is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of environmental studies and ecological modeling. He has authored or co-authored 8 books and over 200 scholarly publications and received national and international awards for research and leadership in the field of ecology, including election to the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 1991 as a Corresponding Member and since 1997 as a Full Member).

Dr. Vaganov is a graduate of Krasnoyarsk State University. He earned his Ph.D. in 1975 and his Doctor of Science degree in 1984. A full professor and chair in the Department of Forestry at Siberian Federal University, Dr. Vaganov served as the Director of the V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest (Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch) from 1994-2006.

Dr. Vaganov’s expertise in dendrochronology led him to study a number of processes with a major emphasis on dendroclimatology. He participated in collaborative research programmes with American, German, Swiss, British and Russian universities and research groups developing monitoring networks for climate change research. With a strong interest in ecosystem functioning, Dr. Vaganov has consulted extensively for universities and research groups around the world.

Professor Vaganov is the recipient of various national and international awards, including the Public Recognition Award from the Russian Government, the Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the V.N. Sukachev Award from the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Vaganov served as Director of the Siberian International Centre for Ecological Research of Boreal Forests and sits on the editorial boards of two national and three international journals. The Rector is the Chair of the Russian Federation IGBP National Committee and his expert opinion has been sought on the environmental impact assessment of MMS Norilsk Nickel.
