Peaceful space exploitation discussed at the World Youth Model UN
United Nations Organization (UNO) Model Student Club was held at SibFU on May 22nd, 2015. The topic of the meeting was “For peaceful space exploitation”. The discussion was dedicated to development of space industry and navigation-satellite systems in the world.
A large number of students of various nationalities from different SibFU schools presented their countries’ opinions, covering a wide range of space exploration aspects: from space research in history and modern days, to using navigation-satellite systems, and commercialization of space research and insurance of objects in space.
The event took place as a part of the visit of the delegation from United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).
Andrey Kupriyanov, executive director at GLONASS/GNSS-Forum, admitted that “the organizational level of the meeting impressed the delegation immensely. An expected conversation with students has turned out to be a colourful full-fledged UNO conference”.
UNOOSA official Sharafat Gadimova (Baku, Azerbaijan) invited the University to visit the real UN headquarters in Austria: “We believe you should attend a real UNOOSA meeting, since the today’s event proved to be of a ‘live’ level of maturity. We were deeply impressed by a high level of English-language proficiency the presenters demonstrated and the solemn opening of the Model”.
UNOOSA official from Vienna (Austria) Akhmed Osman noted the importance of international clubs like the SibFU UNO Model Student Club. “Every major university of the world, including those in Vienna, runs its own club of the kind. This is a crucial part of student life, which benefits future diplomats’ professional development”.
