Students from Jamaica will study in SibFU

Flag of Jamaica The School of Non-Ferrous Metals and Material Science has an addition of 25 Jamaican students who had arrived to study. All of them had won UC RUSAL's sponsored scholarship program in a competition.

The aforementioned winners who had just graduated from their high schools got their program participant's certificates handed to them in a ceremony held in Kingston (Jamaica) on 24th of November, 2015 by the Minister of Education of Jamaica Mr. Thwaites, the Minister of Energy, Mining, Science and Technology of Jamaica Mr. Paulwell and Russian Ambassador to Jamaica Vladimir Polenov. It was noted that after their study in Russia is over, the students, primarily originating from the rural areas of Jamaica, where RUSAL facilities are situated, are going to bring home their new engineering skills ready to play a substantial role in securing the island's successful economic development.

According to Olga Osipenko, deputy of the Vice-rector for Academic Affairs, building of the international environment at the university is one of the main goals.

"The internationalization allows preparing specialist in absolutely different environment. The problem of internationalization is taken into consideration very seriously because the SibFU is one of the leading universities. There are several ways of solving the problem. For example, creating a set of high-quality educational programs in English, which are in demand among English-speaking students. There are so-called quotas of Ministry of Education and Science. Another serious approach is educating the potential employees of the big companies, which are our partners, - said Olga. – Despite that “Rusal” has enterprises abroad, the company prefers preparing their employees in the big Russian universities. The arrival of the Jamaican students is one of results of our collaborative work with the company, as well as planning an elite and technological Master’s Program".

According to Vladimir Baranov, the head of the School of Non-Ferrous Metals and Material Science, the first year of education will be devoted to studying Russian language. The four teachers from the School of Philology and Language Communication will assist students.

"Applications will be accepted under general conditions. A set of subjects will be in Russian and another set in English.
They will spend from 2 to 6,5 years in the SibFU, - said Vladimir. There are foreign students studying at the University already but it's for the first time when such a big group arrived. They have a lot of questions and worries, it's natural because they are only 17–19 years old, and they came from across the globe. Now we are thinking about different ways of their adaptation, and we hope that our students will help"
.

In addition, currently, there are about 500 foreign students from 30 countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Germany, Spain, Japan, and more than 20 teachers in the SibFU. The amount of the foreign students is about 2% from all students. To implement the aims of the 5-100 project this number has to be increased up to 10% by 2020.
