The SibFU team has defended the Project 5-100 Roadmap

March 18, 2016 the defense of the Program Roadmap took place in Moscow at a meeting of the International Council on enhancing the competitiveness of the leading Russian universities among the world leading research and education centers by the team of Siberian Federal University.

The Roadmap is a plan of action to implement program of enhancing the competitiveness with reference to specific dates. It allows the members of the International Council and the staff of the University to adequately assess how successful the project is from the start to its finish in 2020.

The Roadmap of SibFU contains information about the mission and the unique positioning of the university. Thus, the university claims to be conducting “comprehensive support of the environmental management of the unique areas that are rich in renewable resources where you need to combine a balanced approach towards the application of environmental, energy effective and information technologies of using rich natural resources while maximizing preservation of the natural environment, creating an advanced education, research and innovation infrastructure, promoting new knowledge and technologies and creating high capacity industries to assist in resolving the pressing issues of mankind”.

In its research, education and innovation activities SibFU focuses on the following global issues:

  • Forecasting of climate change and its consequences;
  • Reducing of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere;
  • Improving the quality and duration of human life;
  • Improving the efficiency of the extraction and use of resources;
  • Overcoming the limitations of electronics capacity.

The choice of the global issues outlined in the Roadmap is determined by the geographical location of the University. SibFU is in the center of Siberia, near the poorly studied climatic zones that have a significant impact on climate change around the world.

Competitive advantages of SibFU are emphasized in a separate block of the Roadmap including high-quality publication activity, good positions for entering the subject rankings, a strong portfolio of elite Masters programs. In addition, according to the analytical group creating the Roadmap of the 5-100 Project, the University has to its credit the successful launch of the PhD-programs, a presentable campus and residence halls, as well as a strong financial support from the regional government and formed partnership system with the leading Russian financial industrial groups that are active in the region.

The priority of the SibFU Roadmap in 2016 is the institutional redesign of education, involving consolidating of existing institutions into new units with an objective of creating a cooperation environment to resolve global issues and improve the competitiveness of the unique academic units in the global market.

Consistent implementation of the planned activities and solving organizational problems will increase research productivity and create a working system of university management. The success of the university in the research and educational environment will help to shape the reputation of it as a leader in the field of sustainable development and take a confident position in the market of international research and educational projects.

The university team presenting the Roadmap to the members of the International Council consisted of the SibFU rector Eugene Vaganov, first vice-rector Pavel Vcherashny, research and international cooperation vice-rector Sergey Verkhovets, deputy vice-rectors Evgeniya Turtapkina, Vera Upirova and Alexey Romanov. The team also included the members of the SibFU International Council — Regents’ Professor of the University of Arizona (USA) Malcolm Hughes and Director of the Institute of Dendrology, Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland), Professor Jacek Oleksyn.

“Defenses of the Roadmaps will last for two days, all universities of 5top100 Project are involved. According to the schedule, our team was to speak first. Defense lasted almost an hour. Presentation of the University has raised interest among the members of the International Council. There were many questions, we got into a constructive dialogue. How well did it go, and the amount of allocated subsidies for transformational component, we will know in a week.” — said Eugene Vaganov.
