Siberian Federal University enteres the top-20 of media activity of universities

On 26 August 2021, the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education presented a ranking of the media activity of higher educational institutions. Siberian Federal University entered the top 20 universities with high media activity, taking 17th position in the overall ranking.

The ranking takes into account the media activity of 219 universities subordinate to the Ministry and was contributed by representatives of universities, public organizations and the media, as well as experts in the field of mediology and sociology.

At the presentation which took place in the framework of the Russian Creative Week International Festival, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Elena Druzhinina presented the first independent ranking of the media activity of higher educational institutions. In the Science and Technology Pavilion, she brought the light on what indicators would affect the place of the university in the ranking, and told about the intention of the Ministry to hold free training seminars and masterclasses for representatives of universities, which will help them improve their work with the media and social networks.

“The final ranking reflects the cumulative result of the universities' work to popularize Russian science and education. To assess the quality of content, we have chosen indicators that can be calculated or seen in metrics. There are 57 of them in the ranking. During the first preparation, we collected a lot of data manually, literally phoned some universities. But next month already this process will be fully automated,” said Elena Druzhinina.

The final M-rate ranking consists of three indicators: the effectiveness of the university's work with the media (Index Mass Media), social networks (Index Social) and the official website (Index Site). Each of these three indicators has its own specific weight in the final formula and is calculated separately.

  • эффективность работы вузов со средствами массовой информации — 13 место;
  • эффективность работы официального сайта — 15 место;
  • эффективность работы вузов с социальными сетями — 27 место.

In the context of these indicators, the positions of SibFU are:

• the efficiency of work of universities with the media — 13th
• the efficiency of the official website — 15th
• the efficiency of work of universities with social networks — 27th

According to the developers, the indicator of the effectiveness of the university's work with the media takes into account the number of publications about the university and its employees in regional, federal and Internet media, the audience of these sources, the number of news stories released on regional and federal TV channels, and the number of exclusive news pieces about the university or its projects posted on the resources of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia.

The indicator of the university's work efficiency with social networks takes into account the university's accounts and work in eight social networks: VKontakte, Instagram, Telegram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Odnoklassniki, Twitter, as well as traffic brought to the university's website from social networks. At the same time, the significance of the social index for different social networks is not uniform. Social networks VKontakte, Instagram and Telegram have the largest share.
