Siberian Federal University

The Institute of Mining, Geology and Geotechnology, SFU, hosted a student conference on computer applications for mining and mineral exploration. The Institute was also one of the organizers of MINEX Siberia 2008, a business forum held in Krasnoyarsk 28-30 April 2008.

SFU's team won first place and thirteen gold medals at the city student competition in Krasnoyarsk. Students from various Krasnoyask universities competed in different sports, with two SFU teams taking first and second places.

Siberian Federal University received a donation of books featuring art works from the State Tretyakov Gallery. The illustrated catalogues present the Russian art of the X-XVII centuries, the Russian icons of the XVIII-XX centuries, the Russian paintings of the XVIII-XX centuries, the Russian drawings of the XVIII-XX centuries, the Russian sculpture of the XVIII-XX centuries.

Summer sports competitions will take place from the 21st of April until the14th of September.

The competitions will involve students and teachers who will run, rollerskate, cycle, exercise, hike in the Stolbi Nature Park, and canoe.

Eugene Vaganov, SFU's rector, and Alfonso Maldonado Zamora, Director, School of Mining, Madrid Polytechnic University, have signed a collaboration agreement.

The Boards of Trustees for Siberian Federal University and
Southern Federal University met on April 24th in Moscow. The meeting was chaired by the boards' president Dmitry Medvedev.

Siberian Federal University hosted a round table on capital punishment in Russia. The participants of the forum spoke on the arguments for and against capital punishment and discussed the state of penal institutions in Russia.

Stepan Vinnikov, SFU's student from the Department of Power Engineering, won a gold medal at the National Boxing Competition held in Tyumen from 15 to 20 April 2008.

Siberia Conference Centre hosted the Krasnoyarsk City AssemblyFuture Technology last weekend. The meeting's objective was to show research and engineering projects and to gather Siberian researchers developing technology for this region. Siberian Federal University presented forty research projects, of which six received awards. The meeting also featured the XV student software competition. The competition tests students' ingenuity and computer skills and involves high school students, university undergraduates and Ph.D. students.

A group of five SFU students received second place at the National Student Competition in Education and Psychology held 16-17 April in Yekaterinburg.
