Master's degree program “Technosphere Safety in the High North and Arctic Regions”

The aim

The program is aimed at providing students with unique engineering knowledge and practical skills for managing diverse industrial challenges occurred in the High North and Arctic regions. These territories are of great importance for commercial developments as well as for political interests. Moreover the major part of Siberia is located in the High North and Arctic regions resulting in long-term experience of the territories development. The program “Technosphere Safety in the High North and Arctic Regions” focuses on safety assurance and maintenance of comfortable environment for work and living in technospere on the basis of positive current experience and up-to-date technical developments.


The program “Technosphere Safety in the High North and Arctic Regions” is designed to give students professional skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • arrangement and coordination of operations directed at workers’ health and safety protection;
  • compliance monitoring;
  • fire safety and fire prevention procedures;
  • sustainable development of national economic assets in conditions of the High North and Arctic Regions;
  • environment, safety and health;
  • environmental expertise.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  • define and consider problems of national economic assets, formulate and solve engineering tasks in the area of Technosphere safety;
  • design and develop systems for environmental safety of the High North and Arctic regions taking into account diverse technological factors;
  • apply control technologies for particularly dangerous wastes in the High North and Arctic regions, including cavitation technology of desalination of sea water and groundwater, wastewater treatment in circumpolar areas, including Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Canada and the United States;
  • search and apply original solutions in the area of renewable energy sources;
  • work effectively individually as well as in a team of co-workers.

Career prospects

Upon successful completion graduates should be equipped with a range of practical and applied environmental skills, which can help with relevant employment in a public or commercial company. Moreover, graduates can continue their education and get a PhD (PhD SibFU).

Module “Technologies of Life-Support systems and Risk Management in the High North” and Course “Design of Experiments” are available on-line (by agreement).

On the course of the program additional practical summer trainings are provided (7-day intensives electives): “Handling with highly dangerous and radioactive wastes”, “Cavitation technologies for marine desalination, groundwater and wastewater treatment”, “Methods and means of disposing of oily wastes”, “Technology of emergency strategies in the circumpolar regions”. Interactive classes give every student an opportunity to discover creative potential and to establish new business and scientific contacts.

Participants of summer trainings will collaborate with well-known scientists and experts from Special Designing and Technological Bureau "Nauka" KSC SB RAS, Emercom of Russia in Krasnoyarsk region, Closed-Joined Company “Zeleniy Gorod”.

Foreign partners of the program: Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University Of Science and Technology, etc. On the basis of bilateral agreements a mutual exchange of faculty staff is organized for the purpose of lecturing and scientific training. Students’ mobility between universities aimed at scientific training and collaborative research.

Master Thesis

The complexity of the thesis is 50 ECTS. The Master Thesis is based on one or two selected modules (areas, issues in the area of technosphere security) included in the Program, for example, Cavitation technologies for marine desalination, groundwater and wastewater treatment, Life support systems for circumpolar regions, or Reliability of equipment or operation and maintenance. It is desirable to arrange work on thesis with an industrial partner or scientific institutions to the prospects of outcomes application in the practical area. The supervisor can be of a staff member of the graduating chair or qualified representative from industry or research institution. Selection of research issue and the launch of the Thesis is in student's responsibility. During the work on his Thesis, the student must demonstrate acquaintance with research methodology and skills in the field of scientific prediction and analysis.

The city is located on the banks of the Yenisey River in the valley formed by the Eastern Sayan Mountains. Nature reserve Stolby ("pillars") has become the city’s visiting card.

Among the famous people born in Krasnoyarsk are artist Vasily Surikov, opera singer Dmitri Hvorostovsky, biathlete Evgeny Ustyugov, skeletonist Alexander Tretyakov and ice-hockey player Alexander Semin.

In March 2019 Krasnoyarsk proudly hosted the XXIX Winter Universiade.
