SibFU's pilot project: elite engineering education

SibFU opens an elite engineering programme. It aims to raise the quality of engineering education and improve the structure of engineering training.

The project will last for two years and it embraces three master's programmes. They are: System Analysis, Metals and Alloys Processing, Computer Aided Design.

According to Natalia Gafurova, SibFU's Vice-Rector (Academic Affairs), the decision about launching the pilot project is directly in line with the government's agenda to raise the prestige of the engineering profession. «Russian President identified the economic priorities for innovative development. In particular, they include: efficient use of energy and other resources; nuclear, space, medical and strategic information technologies. Meeting these challenges implies a high skilled labour pool of professional engineers. As a federal university, we strive to contribute to raising the prestige of the engineering profession. Improving the quality of training turns it into a realistic task. Currently, the project embraces three programmes. If employers demonstrate some interest and the project is successful we intend to enlarge its scope».

«Public funding of the engineering education is on average 120 thousand roubles (4000 dollars) for an engineer — Natalia Gafurova said — the elite engineering education is expected to be financed from the university's internal funds».

New programmes are developed with practical tasks in mind. «We have tailored the programme so that the number of lectures is reduced compared to direct industrial tasks to be solved during the study process», — Natalia Gafurova said.

Other advantages of the elite engineering education might be joint projects with international universities, SibFU's partners, lectures from the visiting professors from leading European universities, intensive English courses resulting in taking an international examination, work placements in famous research institutes and engineering centres abroad (Germany, the UK, Italy, France).

«When we discuss the new programme launch it is about teaching the programme starting from the next academic year. Admission applications will be accepted from 1 to 31 July 2012, we will conduct interviews from 1 August 2012», — SibFU's Vice-Rector said.

Admission requirements: a bachelor's or specialist's degree in engineering. There are no tuition fees.
