«The efficiency of grant activity (ratio of accepted grants to the number of applications) exceeds a similar indicator for 2011 by 10%; Sergey Verkhovets, Vice Rector (Research and International Collaboration), said. —The institutes with a higher number of grants are Polytechnic Institute, Institute of Economics, Management and Environmental Studies, Institute of Engineering Physics and Radioelectronics, Institute for the Humanities, Institute of Philology and Language Communication. Technology and the humanities seem to have similar chances to get financial support and commercialise their findings».

According to Natalia Edwards, head of the university's research funding centre, research support mostly comes from Russian research funding agencies.

International funding was accepted for 12 joint projects and 71 individual projects. International fundraising was enhanced through two network projects: ERANET and ERANET-Plus. They provide mobility grants, funding for training and re-training.

Institutes that could successfully compete for international grants were involved in grant application process. They are Institute of Philology and Language Communication and Institute of Space and Information Technologies.
