SibFU introduces new study programmes in geography

SibFU is launching new study programmes in geography in collaboration with Russian Geographical Society. The three programmes - Physical Geography and Landscape Studies; Economic, Social and Political Geography; Recreational Geography and Tourism - will be based at the Institute of Economics, Management and Environmental Studies, SibFU.

The Russian government provides funding for 25 scholarships. The programmes include a strong GIS component.

«The university programmes in geography are supposed to match the world standards. We have studied the experience of teaching geography at European and American universities. We have considered state educational standards and international experience — SibFU Rector and RAS Academician Eugene Vaganov said. — Teaching faculty comes from Krasnoyarsk, there will be visiting lecturers from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Barnaul, Tyumen, Tomsk and other Russian cities».

Russian Geographical Society promised to help with geographical books. The Department of Geography and SibFU's Library received the funding of 500 000 rubles to buy text books and teaching guides.

«Russian Geographical Society and Professor Solomon Slevich's widow sent the university a geographical library of 1300 books, — Eugene Vaganov said. — Some contribution comes from NK Rosneft, Sukachev Institute of Forest, Stolby reserve, and other institutions».
