SibFU's young researchers take part in the competition to travel to the North Pole

Four SibFU's representatives have taken part in the first stage of a new project launched by the Federal Agency and Russian Geographical Society.

The organizers selected 100 young people of the age ranging from 18 to 29. Their professional interests are related to the Arctics and they may have research papers on the subject. They will attend the international "Arctic Expedition" forum in Tver from 2 to 7 February 2015.

The forum is a unique educational event with lectures, panels, exhibitions, workshops and experience exchange among attendees, experts and invited speakers.

In addition, young researchers will take part in competitions and intellectual games to win the right of attending the second stage of the project. The smartest and most active participants will travel to 'Barneo' polar station to reach the North Pole.

Researchers to represent SibFU in Tver are Andrey Karsakov, a student from the School of Economic, Management and Environmental Studies, Ivan Kaptyuk and Pavel Kovalevich, lecturers from the School of Oil and Gas, and Eugene Chaikin, a doctoral student from the School of Engineering and Construction.

«My research is about climate change in the Arctics. Hopefully, the expedition will be an incentive for further research, a source of useful experience and unique skills and an opportunity to share my experience with other attendees, — Andrey Karsakov says. — I am greatly interested in travel and adventures. The North is my childhood'd dream. It may become true».

«I tend to be interested in ice and its properties and that's what my research is about. Our studies of ice removal are closely linked to the analysis of its structure and condition. Interestingly, ice properties are different at the Pole», — рассказал Ivan Kaptyuk says.

«I study how to efficiently maintain roads, airports and oil stations in winter. This may have direct effects on living standards for people in the Arctics. I am planning to do research to improve transport systems in winter when travelling to the North Pole», — Pavel Kovalevich says.

According to Eugene Chaikin, he has been taking part in expeditions for several years designing buildings and constructions for northern territories «I like the North, its people and environment. I have been to the 70th latitude and I want it very much to visit the 90th».

The forum organizers received 250 applications from the representatives of 50 educational institutions and 10 institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Russian professionals will be joined by other representatives of Arctic countries (Denmark, Iceland, Canada, Norway, USA, Finland, and Sweden).
