SibFU Scientists Discuss Problems of Space Monitoring

On 13-16 September 2022, SibFU School of Space and Information Technology hosts the 9th International Conference and a school for young scientists on a common topic of the Regional Problems of Earth Remote Sensing.

The Conference covers a wide range of issues: agriculture, reforestation, condition of river basins and reservoirs, the amount and intensity of precipitation in certain areas. The results of space monitoring are in high demand in assessing the wildfire and environmental situation in the region, urban planning and many other areas. It means that this area has both theoretical and practical meaning.

“In modern conditions, conducting projects on climatic research and the development of the North and the Arctic is impossible without satellite systems and space monitoring. In other words, it is becoming a matter of national importance. What is more, if we take issues which are familiar to us, like agriculture, we would see that every year even this area becomes more technologically advanced. It needs in-depth analysis, data systematization and wide area surveillance. And here again we cannot do without space monitoring,” noted in his welcoming speech Dr Eugene Vaganov, SibFU scientific adviser.

Satellite observation provides the opportunity not only to visually assess river floods, the area of snow cover, the state of the woodlands, and the real boundaries of arable land. Space monitoring systems make it possible to take into account the simultaneous influence of many factors and create data banks, thanks to which we can analyse and identify general patterns of various phenomena. For example, floods, droughts, potential soil fertility.

“The topic of the conference is at the intersection of information technology and ecology. This allows studying the issues of the conference from different angles, immediately identifying the goals of the research, and also the technical needs and capabilities of the parties. For the university, all this is of particular significance, since SibFU operates the world-class Yenisey Siberia REC, which investigates the same topic. The conference will definitely help to correct the vectors of further work of various research teams,” summed up Dr Ruslan Baryshev, Vice-Rector for Research.

The conference is sponsored by Krasnoyarsk Regional Foundation of Research and Technology Development Support. After the conference, the proceedings will be published.
