The official ceremony of launching the construction of the new halls of residence was held in Siberian Federal University. The ceremony was attended by Aleksander Uss, SibFU President, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Krasnoyarsk territory, Evgeny Vaganov, SibFU Rector, Ekaterina Sidorenko, Chairman of the SibFU Student Primary Trade Union Organization, Students of the SibFU Building Group and representatives of the construction organization.

Aleksander Uss launched the construction by driving the first pile. In the opening speech, he pointed out that this is the unique large-scale construction of the halls of residence in Russia: «Today Siberian Federal University is the only higher educational institution entitled to realize such a huge construction project. At least 2500 students will be living here. It is important to note that we are talking about the newest and comfortable halls of residence».

Nowadays, only 40% of students are provided with the housing. Evgeny Vaganov said: «As far as the SibFU is getting more and more attractive for admission, the number of prospective students from other cities and countries is increasing greatly. Today we need to solve the problem with a lack of halls of residence as soon as possible». When the construction of halls of residence №1 and №2 is completed, 85% of students will be provided with proper housing. The rooms will be available for students, postgraduates and faculty members of the University.

Student building groups will be also involved in the construction at the third working term. Aleksander Naiman, Leader of the SibFU Student Builging Group was positive to admit: «We build our future on our own as a tribute to the tradition appeared from the first days of the SibFU establishment. No one will build the hall of residence better than we can as we work not only with our hands but also with our heart».

It is important to note that the construction of the new halls of residence was launched jointly with the planned repair works of the University: this year 97 million rubles were allotted on the housing maintenance. The current repair will also include old roof replacement, wire, floor and windows renewal of all the SibFU halls of residence. Ekaterina Sidorenko pointed out: «There is a great work set up to reconstruct and upgrade the SibFU halls of residence. As a result, we will be surrounded by the newest buildings providing students with appropriate living and working conditions».

Five new halls of residence will be built at the open space near the hall of residence N20 (76 Svobodny prospect). The construction will be held in two stages. The first complex will comprise two 10-floor buildings. One and two bedroom apartments will be equipped with all the required basic amenities. The halls of residence will be united by the 5-floor public building with laundry, gym, internet-café, canteen and medical station available. The first hall of residence will be set into operation by September 01, 2012.
