SibFU researchers develop an agricultural doctor

Dr Irina Gaidasheva, a biotechnologist and the head specialist at SIbFU's Research Centre, has developed 'Laterin', a biopesticide to improve plant growth and protection. The biopesticide might meet the demands of gardeners, farmers and forest specialists.

The product aims to control and prevent some dangerous plant diseases, such as the problems caused by Fusarium, that result in crop yields loss or significant reduction or cause the death of plants. The substance differs from other biopesticides. It simultaneously controls diseases and stimulates growth. It is non-toxic and safe for people and domestic animals. The product can be bought from retailers in 2013.

Dr Gaidasheva spent several years working on the project. The research outcomes are presented in her doctoral thesis defended at Moscow State University in 2011. The thesis is titled 'Developing a Biopesticide Produced from Streptomyces lateritius 19/97 M Strain to Improve Plant Growth and Protection'.

Dr Gaidasheva is an early career researcher. Her research supervisor, Professor Tatiana Gromovykh from the Moscow State University of Food Industry, isolated the strain and developed a framework to prove its efficiency in preparing a biopesticide. She received a patent for the invention in 1997. Dr Gaidasheva's research continues the same trend of elaborate investigations.

The biopesticide project was listed among the best innovative projects of early career scientists at 2011 competition at the Moscow University of Physics and Technology.

Dr Gaidasheva's next research project is about microbial decomposition of timber wastes
