Professor Vaganov, the university rector, participated in a meeting of the State Council, Russian Federation. The event was held to discuss Russia's Strategic Development Plan to 2020. The meeting was attended by regional governors, heads of regional assemblies, heads of the Federal Assembly chambers and members of the Cabinet.

Siberian Federal University hosted the First Regional Conference «National Park Yergaky: History and Prospects» on the 12th of February. The conference was chaired by Andrey Gnezdilov, regional deputy governor.

Lyudmila Kulagina, a Ph.D student from the Department of Advanced Materials and Technologies, Polytechnic Institute, won the «Engineer 2007» award at the VIII National Competition in Engineering.

Dr Sadykov from the Institute of Mathematics, Siberian Federal University won a three-year grant from «Dinastia» Foundation. The foundation is a prestigious national institution awarding scholarships to early career mathematicians with a Ph.D degree or a second doctoral degree (Doctor of Science in Physics and Mathematics).

New Year Trees made from various geometric objects that form architectural compositions decorate the main building of the Institute of Urban Construction and Regional Economics.

Olga Shevchenko from the Department of Physical Education, Siberian Federal University won two silver medals at the European Championship in Ski Orienteering in s-chanf, Egadin, Switzerland. The event held in this Alpine area from 14 to 20 January was organized by Swiss Orienteering Federation and Ski-O Swiss. The university’s representative won silver in sprint and relay.

Elsevier and Web of Science are expected to be the main information sources for SFU scholars, which will help them to improve their research, publish extensively and communicate their results to the international audience.

Siberian Federal University has received formal institutional accreditation from the Federal Agency for Inspection in Education and Research, an accrediting body for institutions of higher education. Accreditation was granted for over 170 programmes including those administered at regional campuses. The university received its accreditation December 29, 2007, following a full inspection in autumn 2007.

The Journal of Siberian Federal University received ISSN numbers for its three serials: Mathematics and Physics, Biology, Humanities and Social Sciences. The university will publish these journals at the end of January. Olga Alexandrova, the journal’s managing editor, is preparing the second issue of the serials to be published in spring 2008.
