Prof. Tom Fleming held the lecture called «Creative Economy and City Development: challenges, possibilities and results» on December 16, 2009 in Siberian Federal University.

The lecture was organized by Siberian Federal University, Creative Industries Agency (Moscow, Russia), the Ministry of Culture of Krasnoyarsk Region and the Mikhail Prokhorov Fund.

The lecture was based on actual examples and devoted to experiences of different cities around the world which strive to become the centers of creative economy.

The following questions were covered during the lecture:

  • How the unique resources of each city can be used to develop creative economy?
  • What difficulties and challenges do representatives of authorities, business and creative industries face? What principles of effective planning are required to develop creative economy in the city?
  • What role do creative clusters and networks play?
  • What is interculturalism? How are creativity and innovations connected between each other?
  • What new possibilities are required to develop cultural and creative infrastructure?

Prof. Tom Fleming is a Head of the Company «Tom Fleming Creative Consultancy» and a Consultant in the field of research and support for Creative Industries at all levels, including the overlap between culture and creativity and cities and regional development. His areas of experience include cities, creative industry development programmes for cities, concerning consulting and business planning for cultural institutions and business organizations. He has worked in over 25 countries around the world – from Moscow to Rio de Janeiro and from Beirut to Vilnius.
