Summer school called «Contemporary biotechnologies are the basis for sustainable development of society» was held on June 1-5, 2010 in the SibFU Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology.

Summer school on biotechnologies was held for the first time. Students of different years of study and specialties interested in biotechnologies came to gain some experience from the world-leading scientists of Moscow, Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk. As explained by Valentin A. Sapozhnikov, Head of the SibFU Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology: «We intended to make the summer school right in this concept. The summer school gives an opportunity to get an insight into the state-of-the-art technologies, achievements and activities of the most vital field of science and also talk shop with the famous biotechnologists of the country». Organizers of the school said that students from other higher educational institutions were attracted by the idea of getting «the right knowledge in the right time».

Lectures, seminars and round-table discussions were devoted to genetic engineering, elaboration and application of the new materials. The following issues were discussed during the summer school:

• How to eliminate green scum? How to improve the quality of water?
• What is biochip? How the environment pollution can be controlled by it?
• How to make the unique medicine which would cure and not kill?
• What is environmental biomanipulation?
• Is it healthy to eat nano products?
• How to grow plants by micro cloning?

Biotechnologies are the priority area of R&D activities in Siberian Federal University. Biotechnologies produce a diverse range of goods essential for human day-to-day needs. All developed countries consider biotechnologies to be the main branch of industry. All the newest biotechnologies based on application of recombinant DNA caused «biotechnological boom» which we are witnessing at the moment. The newest technologies of genetic engineering enable to update technological processes and elaborate the unique goods. Since 2008, prospective students have the opportunity to be enrolled in the specialty «Microbiology and Biotechnology» in the SibFU Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology.
