The International Translation Competition (Young Translators)

The International Translation Competition (Young Translators) to be held from 20 March to 20 April will have Chukovsky's quote as its motto: 'Translation is a translator's self-portrait'.

The competition is organised by the Department of Modern Languages for Business, Institute of Economics, Management and Environmental Studies, Siberian Federal University with the support from the Union of Translators of Russia, Korean Cultural Centre, Institute of the Russian Language (Heilongjiang University, China), 'Vesti Turtsii Bosfor' a weekly international newspaper.

Competition 2010 involved more than 250 entry submissions from the institutes of Siberian Federal University, 38 Russian universities and 6 international universities. Competition 2011 considered more than 400 submissions from Siberian Federal University, 53 Russian universities and 10 international universities (Ukraine, Latvia, Turkey, China, Japan).

The competition judges are from the international translation elite, which enhanced the competition status. The judges live and work in the UK, China, Japan, South Korea, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk. Many of them delivered lectures and workshops on translation theory and practice at Siberian Federal University (I.S. Alexeeva, Saint Petersburg; O.M. Gotlib, Irkutsk; M. Taimanova, UK). The chair of the judges' board is L.O. Gurevich, President for the Union of Translators of Russia, a specialist in simultaneous translation and fiction translation.

Participants will have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills of written translation into their native language.

Rules

Entrants can be young specialists, undergraduates and doctoral students under 30 years of age from Russian and international universities.

The competition will be held in seven languages (English, Chinese, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, German, Russian) and four nominations:

  • literary translation (prose, poetry);
  • translation of an essay;
  • translation of a newspaper story;
  • translation of a joke.

Participants will submit their entry (for a single chosen nomination) with an entry form.

Closing date for receipt of entries: 20 April 2012, 17 pm.
