A Graduate of SibFU Defended an Inclusive Media Project for Surikov Museum

Anastasia Askarova, a graduate of the Journalism department of Siberian Federal University, created Surikov Aloud, an inclusive educational media project, as part of her thesis. This is an interactive video tour across the permanent exhibition of the Vasily Surikov Estate Museum, which will allow hard of hearing to learn more about the artist’s life and work.

Follow the Anastasia’s project via this link. This is an interactive website with a video tour along the real halls of the estate with a translator of the Russian sign language. The end of the tour offers a quiz to consolidate knowledge, assemble a jigsaw puzzle of the artist’s paintings, and also play an interactive game.

“I went to school, where there was a class for hard of hearing children, and they always played separately from us. I saw how difficult it was for them to interact with us. It’s great that within the framework of scientific work and diploma defence, we can do work that is needed and useful to someone other than us,” — said Anastasia Askarova.

It is remarkable that the creation of humanitarian online projects in collaboration with cultural institutions of the city of Krasnoyarsk within the framework of the graduation thesis defense is a regular work carried out at the Department of Philology and Journalism of SibFU. It solves several tasks at once. Firstly, the development by journalists and media specialists of electronic texts, interactive maps and visual designs for such institutions as museums, library collections or archives contributes to the preservation of historical and cultural heritage. Secondly, students master all stages of media production from the very idea to promotion and they graduate from the university with extensive skills for working in the media industry.

“We go beyond our space, learn to cooperate, create a product that pursues not only educational goals. This poses a serious task for us -- to make a product of high content and technical quality. Currently, our portfolio includes several partner projects with Krasnoyarsk museums and theatres (for example, Surikov Estate Museum, the Peace Square Museum Centre, the Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, the Opera and Ballet Theatre, Pushkin Drama Theatre). These are longreads, audio guides, virtual excursions, including ones for people with disabilities. Every year we create something new,”, said Daria Ustyuzhanina, curator of this work at the university, senior lecturer at the Department of Journalism and Literary Studies.
