SibFU entered the 100 most green universities in the world according to Green Metric

UI GreenMetric World University Ranking-2022 was released on 12 December 2022. Siberian Federal University took 78th place in the top of the greenest universities in the world, and also retained the second place in Russia.

The total score of Siberian Federal University has risen by 325 points. The university showed the greatest growth in the “waste management” and “energy and climate change” indicators. It should be noted that SibFU shows a steady growth in indicators and maintains its position in the main environmental ranking of the world, despite the fact that the number of participants increases every year — 1050 universities entered the ranking in 2022, which is 94 more than last year.

According to SibFU Rector Maksim Rumiantsev, these indicators became possible thanks to the work of the entire university personnel. Their work resulted in establishment of a world-class Yenisey Siberia Research and Educational Centre on the basis of SibFU — a testing ground for research. Besides, as part of the implementation of the Priority 2030 state program, SibFU also founded a Centre for Low-Carbon Development and Climate Policy and prepared infrastructure of the Green Station — a laboratory with a zero carbon footprint —, and included a massive open online course on environmental competencies into the curricula of all areas of undergraduate and specialist degree programs. Since 2021, SibFU has been running an energy efficiency program.

“It is important to make sustainability a part of the daily routine of our campus residents. In the late November, the SibFU Academic Council adopted a sustainable development policy which includes the use of green technologies on campus. This means that the university recognizes its responsibility to the future generation for the preservation of the environment and is ready to support the sustainable development of Krasnoyarsk Territory and Russia not only with scientific research and student initiatives but also with a personal example,” said Maksim Rumiantsev.

According to the document, for example, it is planned to reduce the cost of electricity consumption per person on campus by 10%, expand the separate waste collection program on campus and optimize transport logistics by 2024.

The ranking was initiated by the University of Indonesia in 2010 to measure efforts to ensure the sustainability of campus.
