Siberian Federal University

The Russian Polish Centre was established at Siberian Federal University in September. The aim of the Centre is to act as a link between Siberian Federal University and Polish institutions of higher education, representatives of Polish administration, public and private companies.

Anna Verbitskaya, a fifth year student from the Institute of Urban Construction, Management and Regional Economics, Siberian Federal University, won a silver award at the Open Championship in Paragliding in Kazakhstan and a gold award at the CIS Open Championship in Paragliding.

Students from Siberian Federal University received awards at the international singing festival in Tuapse, Russia. The festival featured 85 singers from Russia and other countries.

Doctoral students from Siberian Federal University received awards from the Governor for Excellence in Science.

Sergey V. Kirienko, head of the Russian nuclear agency, Rosatom, and Eugene A. Vaganov, university rector, signed an agreement to develop the agency's reseach and engineering facilities based in Krasnoyarsk Krai. The agency intends to boost polycrystal silicon production, which will lead to producing solar cells and semiconductors used in electronics. The university will use an agency's facility to do research developed by its Department of Physical Chemistry. The agency will cooperate with the university staff, students and graduates in achieving high standards of research and engineering.

First year students started the 2008-2009 academic year with a formal celebration and a reception in the Siberia Hall. The University Rector Eugene A. Vaganov and the Governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Alexander G. Khloponin talked to new and returning students and welcomed them to Siberian Federal University.

Centre for Advanced Research and Innovation, Siberian Federal University, established new research groups.

On the 6th of July Siberian Federal University started “Siberia and the World” international festival. Within the framework of the festival Siberian cultural heritage and educational potential was presented. The presentation was aimed at establishing and developing SibFU international contacts and academic exchanges with international partners.

Nikolay Sazhin, a fourth year student from the Institute of Space and Information Technology, won the world championship in chessboxing. He defeated the experienced world champion Frank Stoldt from Germany in six rounds of chess contest and five rounds of boxing.

Festival participants from universities in seven countries visited "Sayan Ring", the Fifth International Festival of Traditional Music in the south of Krasnoyarsk Krai and had a mountainous tour in Ergaki Nature Park. This part of the festival was organized by the Department of International Affairs, Siberian Federal University, Department of Art History and Theory and Culture Studies, Institute for the Humanities, Siberian Federal University, organizers of the Sayan Ring Festival and senior management of Ergaki Nature Park.
