SFU's Institute of Physics and Technology has been renamed the Research Centre of Innovative Technology. The Centre will develop innovative projects and involve students in research activities.

Dr Verkhovets, the university's Vice-Rector (Research and International Affairs) visited Fudan University, Shanghai on March 27-29, 2008. It was a formal visit to establish collaboration with the third best Shanghai university in education and academic research. The universities will develop academic exchange and research collaboration in economics, power engineering, mining and linguistics.

Siberian Federal University and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations have concluded an agreement to strengthen their academic exchange and research collaboration.

Lyudmila Kasyanova, who graduated from Polytechnic Institute in 2007, received the first place at the National Competition of Thesis on Standards and Certification. Her project National Standards for Hydrostatic Bearings can be used by various engineering companies for their work. Sixty seven graduates from 27 universities competed for this prize.

SFU's researchers have received grants from the President of the Russian Federation to support leading research groups and early career professors. The President's grant has already been awarded to Professor Tsikh research group and to Dr Ponomarev, Dr Tsarev and Dr Menyailo.

Professor Eugene Vaganov, university rector, and Valery Zakharov, the leader of the Federal Antimonopoly Service, Krasnoyarsk Krai, have signed an agreement to exchange information and students. Through this project, the Departments of Law and Economics will collaborate with the Federal Antimonopoly Service doing research and publishing research results. SFU's graduates will have an opportunity of internships at the FAS.

If the operational processes of the heat exchangers used in oil refineries are optimized, the quantity of their harmful emissions can be reduced and their high energy costs can be decreased. Lyudmila Kulagina, a Ph.D. student from the Department of Information Processing, Siberian Federal University, has developed a new method for doing this by computing the parameters of optimal control for heat exchangers under constant operation. Design can thus be optimized at an early stage.

A Ph.D. student from Siberian Federal University attended a conference on the best practices in different national juvenile justice systems in Verona, Italy from 13 to 15 March, 2008. V.G. Kaminsky, a researcher from the Department of Criminology and Law of Torts, discussed the university's experience of involving students and teachers from the Faculty of Law in rehabilitating young offenders.

The Agency of Labour and Employment (Krasnoyarsk Krai administration) and the Career Centre at Siberian Federal University opened the university's first Information Kiosk on March 18, 2008.

The university celebrated the first spring festival, inviting faculty and staff to its stadium on March 9, 2008. The staff was welcomed by Professor Valentin Zhuravlev, Vice-Rector (Undergraduate Core Programmes).
